About the Opportunity

Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology now has exciting opportunities for full-time Laboratory Assistants to join the Molecular Pathology/NIPT Department at Bowen Hills, QLD.

After training has been provided, some of your duties will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Performing specimen log-in, specimen retrieval, processing, and filing;
  • Conducting DNA/RNA extraction (manual and automated);
  • Handling phone enquiries and reagent preparation;
  • Operatiing specimen handling instruments; and
  • Performing other general laboratory duties as assigned by the Lab Assistant Supervisor or Laboratory Management.

Routine hours of duty for this position are weekdays, Monday through Friday. Weekday rostered shift times are currently 6 am - 2 pm, 7 am - 3 pm and 10 am - 6 pm, typically in blocks of at least two weeks rostered to one of those times and rotating.

We are seeking candidates with an interest in infectious disease testing, as well as those interested in pre-natal testing and human molecular genetics.  

Previous experience in similar roles will be beneficial, however all training is provided. Existing staff members having success in this role include those who have worked successfully as baristas and in fast paced services roles in cafes and restaurants.

Participation in the weekend shift pool – rostered as one shift on a Saturday or Sunday, may also be required. 

About You

The successful candidate will ideally have the following: 

  • The ability to deliver a pathology service involving administrative laboratory pre-analytical duties
  • Previous experience in a pathology laboratory, particularly in addressing outstanding/pending tests and sample storage retrieval
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, negotiation and communication skills and the ability to work as an effective member of the team
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritise workload and work methodically and efficiently whilst adhering to occupational health and safety policies
  • The ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • The ability to be an effective team member and have a positive influence on other staff, and
  • A sound knowledge of computers and software, in particular Excel.

Suitable applicants should be enthusiastic, possess good communication and organisational skills and have the ability to work unsupervised or as part of a busy and motivated team. A high level of commitment to laboratory turnaround times, customer service, accuracy of processing and laboratory goals is required.
