About the Opportunity

We now have an exciting opportunity for enthusiastic and self-motivated individuals to join our team as a Full Time or Part Time Day Laboratory Assistant within the Sterilising Department of our Bowen Hills laboratory. The Sterilising Department is a central cleaning and sterilisation facility for glassware and lab ware used in the various departments at the Bowen Hills Laboratory and is also responsible for assembly of a range of specimen collection kits.

Currently, the shift times are 6:00am to 2:00pm or 7:00am to 3:00pm Monday to Friday. On rare occasions some Saturday overtime maybe required. 

Duties Include:

  1. Collection of dirty laboratory glass and plastic ware.
  2. Performance of relevant tasks relating to the cleaning, disinfecting and rinsing of laboratory glassware and medical instruments used in the Practice.
  3. Wrapping, packaging and sterilisation of cleaned items.
  4. Delivery of cleaned laboratory ware.
  5. Assembly of various specimen collection kits including assistance to Production in the Warehouse/Supply dept. as required.
  6. Assistance to the Microbiology department as a walking courier to take Sendaway specimens to Transport or the Courier department.
  7. Assistance to other Bowen Hills departments with dispensing reagents from larger to smaller volumes. 

The successful applicant will have:

  • Demonstrated interpersonal, and communication skills and the ability to work as an effective member of a small team.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritise workload and work methodically and efficiently, whilst adhering to occupational health and safety policies.

Prior laboratory experience is not essential but would be advantageous.

Whilst the primary role of the successful applicant will be in the Sterilising department there may be a requirement at times, depending on workload to assist in other departments on Level One. Such duties may include assisting with scanning and photocopying in the IFOBT Laboratory or assisting with various Laboratory assistant duties in the Microbiology or Molecular Pathology departments.
