About Your Next Opportunity

Applications are invited for the position of Diagnostic Scientist to join the expanding team of the Centre Bench Department of the Bowen Hills laboratory. Centre Bench is a centralised scientific troubleshooting department providing advice and assistance to referrers, patients, collectors, laboratory staff and pathologists.

The role will suit an experienced diagnostic scientist who is challenge-driven and capable of performing within a high-level problem-solving role. The successful applicant will be required to apply clinical knowledge in the investigation and resolution of recollections, patient misidentifications, missing specimens, and amended reports.

The role demands a combination of complex critical thinking skills and excellent communication skills. This role includes responsibility for sending and reporting samples referred for testing at external laboratories, including liaising with geneticists about complex genetic testing.

The role will suit a scientist with laboratory experience who is looking for a change from an overnight rotational roster while still being able to utilise their clinical and scientific knowledge.

Department hours are 06:00 – 22:00 Monday to Friday, with staff working on a rotational roster. Participation in the after-hours roster – approx. 1 in 4 Saturdays, remote access on-call, and some public holidays are required.

About You

The successful applicant must be able to demonstrate the following key attributes:

  • excellent communication and organisational skills
  • a commitment to quality customer service and accountability
  • the ability to manage workflow to prioritise clinically significant problems
  • the ability to troubleshoot and problem solve in high-pressure situations
  • the ability to work both independently and within a small team
  • university degree in medical laboratory science or equivalent
  • minimum 3 years of diagnostic pathology laboratory experience (preferably multi-disciplinary)
