Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology (SNP) is one of the largest members of the Sonic Healthcare group, an independent, Australian owned, publically listed, medically managed pathology company.

The SNP Cytogenetics Department is the reference laboratory for cytogenetic testing for Sonic Healthcare in Australia, receiving patient samples from all states and territories. It is the largest cytogenetic laboratory in Australia, and processes all cytogenetic sample types including blood, bone marrow, solid tumours, amniotic fluid, CVS and POC, for testing by karyotyping, microarray and FISH.

About the Opportunity

Applications are invited for the newly created full time position of Scientific Manager, Cytogenetics Department, at Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology’s Bowen Hills laboratory in Brisbane.

This is a management position responsible for overseeing, driving and developing the clinical scientific testing aspects of SNP’s Cytogenetics Department, in consultation with the departmental Operations Manager and Department Head, and reporting to the Department Head, Supervising Pathologist, and Executive Laboratory Manager.

The successful candidate will be a scientific leader with a service orientation and record of achievement. They will possess broad knowledge and experience of cytogenetic testing, including molecular cytogenetic methods such as microarray, in a clinical pathology setting. An understanding of regulatory and quality system requirements for cytogenetic testing will be desirable.

Specific duties associated with this role will include:

  • Oversight of clinical testing, with a focus on delivery of accurate and timely results in a business appropriate fashion;
  • Identification and development of new areas of clinical testing, drawing upon an expert knowledge of existing and emerging technologies;
  • Identification and implementation of continuous improvement opportunities for established clinical testing; and
  • Serving as an expert scientific resource for other staff within the department and organisation, including provision of ongoing education within and external to the department and organisation as appropriate.

An FHGSA qualification or equivalent is essential, and previous experience in a management or supervisory role in a clinical cytogenetics setting is desirable.
